Meghan's Noise Pop Picks 2010!

For additional information about these events, check out the Noise Pop schedule.

Wednesday February 24th
SomaFM's Noise Pop Happy Hour at Bender's
We've got some great acts lined up for tomorrow night. Rusty, Elise and I will be there milling about. Stop by and say hi!

Harlem w/ Best Coast, Young Prisms, the Sandwitches @ Cafe du Nord
I have to say I'm stoked on this show mostly for the openers. The Sandwitches play fuzzed out laid back indie rock with pretty vocal harmonies. With Young Prisms mellow distortion and Best Coasts surf pop, the night will be one of pleasant sound-bending.

Thursday February 25th
The Heart Is A Drum Machine @ Viz Cinema, 9:30 pm
For someone whose life is so deeply tied to music, I can't believe I'd never heard of this film before it appeared on the Noise Pop schedule. Maynard James Keenan, Juliette Lewis, Jason Schwartzmann and others weigh in on the meaning of music to humans. Special bonus: Kurt Loder. Yes!

Friday February 26th
Wallpaper./the Limousines @ Slims
I've been hooked on electro-funk-meister Ricky Reed's jams ever since I heard about Wallpaper. last year. Their full length, Doo Doo Face, is full of seriously addictive party tracks and their live shows are guaranteed to induce boogie-ing. Butterfly Bones and the Limousines are both PopTron classics and Battlehooch's six member party rock ensemble will keep the good vibes going!

Atlas Sound @ Great American Music Hall
Last time I saw Atlas Sound at Great American (co-headlining with a personal favorite, Broadcast) was pretty... weird. But not necessarily weird in a bad way. Anyways, with Geographers expansive yet straightforward synth pop this night should be one to remember.

Saturday February 27th
Memory Tapes @ Bottom of the Hill
Don't know much about Memory Tapes but this is another show of awesome openers. Loquat is a SomaFM favorite, Birds & Batteries make for an excellent show. And Bottom of the Hill! Every time I go to that venue I love it more.

!!! @ Mezzanine
This show is right up my musical alley. Maus Haus, Sugar & Gold and My First Earthquake are always in heavy rotation in my iTunes. Can't get enough of those guys! About as fine an electro-pop showcase at Noise Pop as one could hope for!

Our Noise Pop Happy Hour announced!

If you're into free and fun, you should definitely swing by our Noise Pop Happy Hour at Benders on Wednesday. Some of our favorite local groups - Love is Chemicals, Mist and Mast and the Ian Fays - will be playing. The SomaFM staff will be milling about, spreading the word about our internet radio offerings! There may be some schwag! What more could you ask for?

Show starts at 5 pm, goes til 8 (so you can catch your Noise Pop pick of the night!). Free, 21+. Benders is located at the corner of 19th and South Van Ness.

Elise's Noise Pop Picks for 2010!

Elise picked out her favorite events for the Noise Pop music festival occurring this week. Check below to see the shows that are Indie Pop Rocks approved!

Tuesday February 23rd

Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band at the Fox Theater
She's 77. She's a crazy, out-there artist. Her band includes her son
Sean Lennon (also of Cibo Matto fame) and the one and only Cornelius.
With Deerhoof opening!

Wednesday February 24th

The SomaFM Noise Pop Happy Hour at Bender's Bar
I'm really excited about our fifth annual Noise Pop Happy Hour. It will
be at Bender's Bar on S. Van Ness & 19th again this year (from 5-8pm), and
we've got Love Is Chemicals, The Ian Fays, and Mist and Mast playing --
all Indie Pop Rocks! favorites. Did I mention it's free?

Rogue Wave with Princeton, Man/Miracle, and Two Sheds at Bottom of the Hill
One of my favorite bands playing at my favorite San Francisco venue.
They're playing a small venue for Noise Pop on purpose before their new
album comes out next month and they start their spring tour. Note SomaFM
Happy Hour band from 2009, Man/Miracle, is opening!

Thursday February 25th

The Dodos with the Magik Magik Orchestra at the Palace of Fine Arts
I had a chance to see the first outing of this collaboration at the SF
MOMA, but the room was, well, difficult to see or hear in. I can't wait
to see/hear the performance better, because what I could hear last time
sounded amazing.

Friday February 26th

The Bay Bridged Noise Pop Happy Hour at Bender's Bar
Our neighbors from down the hall are also hosting another happy hour at
Bender's this year, in addition to hosting the events at the Swedish
American Hall again this year. They booked three bands I swear I've never
heard of, but considering the bands they've introduced me to, I can't wait
to hear them, because I bet they rock. Also, it's free. Woot!

John Vanderslice at the Swedish American Hall
I love, love, love John Vanderslice. And I'm super curious about some of
the opening bands for this show: Conspiracy of Venus is an all-women
choir that does really cool arrangements. Can't wait. Oh, yes, and
thanks to the Bay Bridged, there will be beer and wine available, which is
awesome.

Four Tet at The Independent
Four Tet is mostly known for his incredible remixes, but I've been
listening to his original quirky compositions for many years now and
loving them. I'm really curious what his live show will entail.

Saturday February 27th

Pop 'n' Shop, noon-5pm, at The Verdi Club
The best place to find unique and cool gifts and wares. I have so many
things I've gotten over the years at the Pop 'n' Shop that I cherish. Oh,
and I'm providing the soundtrack for the event. :)

brooklynvegan Happy Hour at Bender's Bar
Featuring That Ghost and Odawas, yet another stellar happy hour lineup.
And still free!

We Were Promised Jetpacks at Slim's
The Glaswegian band with the best name ever has one of my new favorite
bands (Bear Hands) opening. YES! Love the Scots!

Thao Nguyen and Mirah at Swedish American Hall
Co-headlining women of awesome indie rock power.

Mark Kozelek at Great American Music Hall
I can't remember if I've ever actually seen Mark Kozelek play solo. I've
seen him with Red House Painters lots of times. Seems like it's been ages
since he played out, absolutely worth going to see.

Sunday February 29th

Dizzy Balloon at Bottom of the Hill, afternoon show
The Sunday afternoon Bottom of the Hill show is almost always one of my
favorite shows every year. This year, Dizzy Balloon headlines again, with
one of my new favorites, Laarks, opening.

Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros at Bimbo's 365 Club
With A B & The Sea, The Watson Twins, and Northern Key opening, this will
be a fun show from start to end.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival

If you're a fan of the Americana and alt-country music found on our channel Boot Liquor, you should definitely head over to Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park this weekend for the FREE Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival. The concert will be held this Friday-Sunday (October 2, 3, & 4) and will span six different stages across the park.

Big names in bluegrass such as Lyle Lovett & His Large Band, Steve Earle & The Bluegrass Dukes, Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, and famed New Orleans songwriter and producer Allen Toussaint will also grace the stages and surely draw the crowds.

Great article on Clubbing in San Francisco: America's equivalent of Berlin for electronic music:
...that's what makes San Francisco unique as a city. San Francisco has a huge base of veteran clubbers who, well-versed in the history of dance music, continue to support the scene...

Airwaves has ended!

Iceland Airwaves concluded last night, and it was a lot of fun. We discovered a lot of new really good artists; we heard new material from some Icelandic artists we've come to love but who don't release enough CDs for us to hear all their material in the US.

Through the next week, we'll be uploading more images, video and audio. We have some great interviews with Benni Hemm Hemm, Borko and Seabear. We theoretically have some good live recordings of some of the acts.

So we'll be posting this in our Iceland Airwaves 2008 event coverage section.

In 24 hours, we'll be headed back to New York for the CMJ conference, where I will be on a panel on Wednesday about the situation with internet radio royalties. The rest of the week, Elise, Merin and I will be hitting up the CMJ Music Marathon music showcases around the city. We'll keep you posted on what we discover.

Iceland AIrwaves Thursday Night Roundup

Tonight, we ran around and saw Soundspell, Disa, Olafur Arnalds, Ghost and FM Belfast.

Iceland Airwaves

Soundspell we saw last year, they're always good to see. They tried out a lot of new material, so hopefully a new CD is coming soon. (We play Soundspell on Digitalis)

Iceland Airwaves

We knew that we'd like Olafur Arnalds performance when they brought out 5 red chairs.

Iceland Airwaves

Olafur Arnalds and his String Quartet mix electronic and classical music, creating beautiful sounds that take you to another place.

Disa at Iceland Airwaves

Disa was a young singer with a small band, kind of reminiscent of old Sugarcubes.

Iceland Airwaves

Ghost got to their set late due to a type in the Airwaves directory- their show was rushed and not as nice as when we caught their small show at the bookstore the other day. Still, they show a lot of promise.

Iceland Airwaves

FM Belfast is a huge local favorite. They're the band that everyone is friends with. 2/3rds of the audience was singing along with their songs and knew every word. They're an electro-pop act that's mostly a DJ/Laptop Performer and a bunch of vocalists / dancers.

Airwaves Wednesday Night Report

Today was a beautiful day in Reykjavik for the start of Iceland Airwaves. Although as I'm writing, the rain has begun to fall- but the sliver lining to that cloud is that the rain makes it warmer than when it's clear. So it's a blessing and a curse.

Lots of people have arrived today. The town is filling up with music lovers, and everyone seems happy and excited.

The real event kicks off at 7:30pm tonight. In addition to all the "on-venue" or official events that make up Iceland Airwaves, there are also a lot of "off venue" performances. These are often at bookstores, coffee houses and smaller bars, and are usually very intimate.

I caught band Ghost doing an in-store show at the bookstore adjacent to our hotel. They have a "real show" tomorrow night before FM Belfast at Tunglið. I got there right as they were finishing, but I really liked them and can't wait to play more of their stuff for you.

Airwaves Officially Begins

We arrived a bit early to Tunglið (which means "The Moon" and is pronounced "Toon-Le-Oh") and the band playing was much too hard for our taste, so we walked next door to Organ to see who was playing. "Perla" was the band, and from the outside as we walked it, they seemed downtempo rock, but then erupted into full-bore death metal; albeit musically complex, and only for a while. Not really our kind of music, but the sort of thing you hear and say, wow, if I liked this kind of music these guys would be great. (And we mean that as a compliment.)

Back to Tunglið and an awesome set tonight by Icelandic band Borko. Don't let the silly-sounding name fool you, these people make beautiful music, mixing laptop electronica, trumpet, guitar, bass and drums. You'll be hearing more from them on Digitalis.

They were followed by local favorites Benni Hemm Hemm who did a good show, but nothing too surprising (we're scheduled to interview Benni

Later, "Hjaltalin" did a really good set at "The Moon". You don't find too many rock bands that feature Oboe and Violin, but they pull it off perfectly- their instrumentation never sounds gimmicky.

We left shortly after local favorites Retro Stefson went on, because frankly Tunglið was too crowded and you couldn't move, and there was a line a block long to get in outside. We figured we'd check out the band playing the "press party" at B5, "UltraMegaTechnoBandidStefan", another Icelandic band.

UltraMegaTechnoBandidStefan put on an Amazing show, and I think that the oldest member of the band was 19. Perhaps I exaggerate. But only about their youth, not about what a great show they put on. Imagine Kraftwerk re-incarnated as teenagers channeling the Sex Pistols and you might get these guys.

We'll have some videos uploaded tomorrow so you can see for yourself.

Tomorrow night: we'll probably see Soundspell, FM Belfast, Ghost, Gusgus, and some others. See you there!

Iceland Airwaves Monday Night Report

We're here in Reykjavik right now, and contrary to what you may be reading in the media about the state of Iceland's economy- I can say that from walking around the city, everything seems to be normal. Stores, bars and restaurants are open, ATMs are dispensing cash, and record stores are selling CDs.

One word of advice I will repeat again and again, however, is make sure you stop at the Duty Free store in the Iceland Airport (there is a big one right next to the baggage claim area) and buy your limit of beer, wine or liquor because it will be about half the prices as it would be to buy from the normal liquor store in town. Even if you aren't going to drink it, it makes a great gift to anyone here, and a great way to make new friends by inviting them back to your hotel for a drink before going back out to the clubs. And because of the strong dollar relative to the Krona, some brands are actually cheaper than in the US.

Iceland Airwaves kicks off in about 48 hours. If you see someone in a SomaFM shirt, say hi and introduce yourself!

SomaFM: Interviews: Parlor Mob

We've been talking to lots of different artists lately, including some that make music outside the genres that we currently play. It's all part of the never-ending search to find more good music.

Parlor Mob

SomaFM: Interviews: Parlor Mob: "
We caught up with the Parlor Mob backstage at Download Festival. The initial comparisons to Led Zeppelin ring true even when these guys aren't on stage; they recline on those tacky red couches with an ease you would expect from a group of classic rock legends. We get to chatting about their first national tour, New Jersey and a run in with Suge Knight."
