This is a special "dub influence" program. Dub was born in Jamaica, is very bass-heavy, and has lots of reggae rhythm influences along with heavy use of echo, reverb and other audio processing tricks. Dub has influenced many electronica artists, adn here are a few of my favorite dub-inspired tracks.

This classic mid-90s chillout track, from a classic Instinct records compilation, also on a full album called 2001-2008. Now out of print, but you can still find copies used at many of the online CD stores. If you think you recognize the underlying bass line, you're correct. It's a sample from....

Groove Salad Taste of the Week for February 28, 2006
Released in 2001 on Water Music Records. Electric Skychurch is Songwriter and producer James Lumb, often along with some friends and collaborators. Currently based in Los Angeles, Electric Skychurch has been around since the early 90s, and their music can range from ambient to dance.
Hefner's Reworks release is a disc of other artist's tracks that producer Lee Jones has remixed, or more accurately, reworked. It's out on Inertia Records from the UK, a bit hard to track down in the states.
Swag is the UK duo Chris Duckenfield & Richard Brown, who have released 50 or more tracks over the last 10 years. This is a track that came out in 2001, on San-Francico-based OM records. It's an older track, but Swag is typcically on the cutting edge of music production so it doesn'ts show it's age.
I picked this CD up in Barcelona when I was there a couple years ago, but it's pretty widely available now. Soulstance is the artist, Blue Grasslan is the track from this Eastern-music inspired chillout compilation from the UK's Ministry of Sound. And if you can't find that, it's also on Guidance Recording's Hi-Fidelity Lounge - Volume Three
Netherlands-based Alex Cortiz brings us a track called Afterworld, from the Magnifico CD release on Coast To Coast records.

(not yet released) |
From Austin Texas, Exstus is producer Bart Landry. Dream is a track he sent us from his upcoming album which he hopes to have relesed this spring. Until then, Groove Salad on SomaFM.com is one of the only places you can hear it, but maybe soon he'll put it on his site at
Long time San Francisco based Funk producers THE WARHEADS teamed up with master Indian flutist Deepak Ram, mixing their beats with Deepak's Bansuri (wooden flutes) playing. They call the project "Funk 'n Gandhi" and this track is "From her voice".
Israeli artist Mo-Shic has released quite a few dance records and is well known in the dance scene, but this is his first full CD, actually a double CD. One CD is all progressive dance tracks, the other CD is downbeat tracks. Salamat in Arabic means Peace and is used as a greeting.
Oforia is goa trace producer Ofer Dikovsky, who proves he can produce some equally chilled out tracks as well as full on goa trance tracks. This track, Day Dream, is only available on the YoYo Records compilation called Life Is...Creation
Polyvinyl is San Francisco producer Konstantin Gredeskoul, who currently records as one half of PolyGroovers. But "Real Illusion" is one of his older tracks, and still one of my favorites. Konstantin told me he recorded the entire song using a single software package running on a laptop, and demonstrates just how much you can do with a lot of creativity and a bit of gear. It's only available online now.

Revenir from the album Helping Hand, by the french duet Man, released on Sub Rosa records. It's their third album in six years, and the album is very eclectic going from deep ambient to experimental to alt-pop.
Talvin by Patchwork (the name that producer Jens Paulsen records as). This is from the 1998 album Odeon which is sadly now out of print and hard to find. I've had good luck with Half.com in the past, or you can also try Gemm.com.
Chilly by TNT Recordings from the album simply entitled, TNT, just arrived in the mail last week. They tell me it's available on both itunes for download and cdbaby.com if you want a real CD. TNT is a group of producers, consisting of guitarist Nigel Watson, bassist Tom Dean, and keyboardist Tate North.
