SomaFM's official iPhone player for iOS 4.0 and above is available in the iTunes App Store.
You can view all our channels by genre, popularity (based on current
number of listeners), or limited to just your favorites; See the title and artist of the currently playing song, as well as the last 10 songs played just like on our website. You can also bookmark favorite songs for purchase on iTunes later (and we get a commission on those sales).
If you're on 3G or WiFi, we give you access to our high quality 128k MP3 streams or AAC-HE streams which sound amazing at a bandwidth effecient 32kbps. Higher quality than many of the other "big" internet radio services out there. 32k aacPlus streams sound as good as 128k MP3 streams in most cases.
Not only can you use it when you're mobile; but it's great when used at home with an iPod touch hooked to your stereo, either docked of via Airplay streaming to an AppleTV or Airport Express. (It works on the iPad too.)
Please note: if you are updating from the original SomaFM player developed by Saturn5, you won't be able to auto update but will have to download the new app.
In case you have any problems with our iPhone app, visit our iPhone player support area for more information or to submit a question or suggestion.
SomaFM streams in Safari, on iPhones and the iPod Touch. When you go to somafm.com on your iPhone, you get an iPhone-specific site with links to quickly and easily select streams for EDGE (32-56k) or WiFi (128k) streams. EDGE streams should work from just about anywhere, while WiFi streams only work within the range of a WiFi hotspot.
While the free iPhone Webapp is missing some of the nicer features of the App Store player, it does have one important feature for devices running iOS 3: you can check email and run other apps while it's playing. You can do anything except make a call or go to other websites when you're playing SomaFM from the webapp.
Another good player-- especially if you listen to more than just SomaFM-- is Streams HiFi Radio with aacPlus support. aacPlus sounds great at low bit rates; including our 40kb streams for Groove Salad, Space Station, Indie Pop Rocks and others. Many people can't tell the difference between a 40kb aacPlus stream and our 128k streams. So if you're not ona 3G phone your carrier has bandwidth caps, this app is a great solution.
