SomaFM Android App

SomaFM Radio Player on Google Play

Version 2.2.4(5) Updated November 18, 2014 fixes crashes on Nexus 9 and MIPS-based tablets; fixes problems with favoriting songs; fixes a database issue that could cause a crash on launch; resolves a bug that prevented streams from playing on some phones, adds support for Qualcomm® AllPlay™ enabled wireless speakers; adds a fix that would cause the app to still use data while playing was stopped. Minor bug fixes and enhancements.

AND we think we've fixed the issue that was causing undue battery drain, even when the app was in the background. Let us know if you still have the problem on your device.

Also available from the Amazon Appstore in the USA.

(and works on Kindle Fire (1st and 2nd Generation), HDX 7, HD 7, HD 8.9, Fire Phone)

SomaFM's official player for Android is now available, giving you direct access to over 20 year-round (plus seasonal holiday) channels of listener-supported, commercial-free, underground/alternative radio.

You can view and pick stations by Popularity, Genre or just see your favorites; See the title and artist of the currently playing and last 10 songs played. You can also bookmark favorite songs for purchase on Amazon or emailing to your friends. You can share what you're listening to on Twitter, via email or text message.

There's also a section for SomaFM news and happenings.

If you're on 3G or WiFi, you have access to our high quality 128k MP3 streams or 64 AAC-HE streams which sound amazing... higher quality than many of the other "big" internet radio services out there. And our low bandwidth 32k aacPlus streams work on slower cell networks, and still sound as good as 128k MP3 streams in most cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do you need my device ID and caller status when installing?

A: We have to use the "READ_PHONE_STATE" API (which includes device ID and caller status) to pause the stream when a call comes in. SomaFM doesn't use any of the information except to get the state of calls in order to properly mute or silence the music.

Q:My SomaFM app indicates it is playing but no sound is coming from my phone.

A: This usually can be fixed by changing the preference setting of the the AAC-support feature. Occasionally, this can also happen due to a cache corruption error, to fix it you will need to quite the app completely and restart it. Some people have reported that restarting their phone completely solved the problem as well. We are still trying to track down this bug.

Q: Are there any plans to update the Android app to support Bluetooth AVRCP 1.3 or newer, so it can stream the song/artist/album information to cars equipped with LCD screens?

A: We plan on supporting this in the near future.

Q: Will there Chromecast support?

A: We are working on it but it's more involved than we thought it would be. But it's definitely a planned feature.

After reading all these blogs (from your listeners), it seems SOMA FM would be alerted that they could have a gold mine. With a working app @ $4.00/App from all these bloggers; smells like money to me...and Soma FM would be introduced to a larger audience that didn't even know SOMA FM existed. I also have a Galaxy 5 and tried many times to purchase your app and could not. I guess I'm stuck with PANDORA, but I like the music your station plays much more and would love it in Blue-Tooth because there are some kick-ass wireless speakers out now. -- Michael, December 4, 2014 at 9:15a

Hello I received my new Nexus 9 today. One of the first apps that I installed was the soma fm app. It crashes imediately upon launch I see that the latest version is supposed to not have this issue anymore. Is there something special I need to do? -- John McIntosh, December 1, 2014 at 4:31p

I have a moto g and the android app seems to always cut out. Plays for a while and then just stops for a while? Any suggestions? Love my Groove Salad! -- pat capozzi, November 28, 2014 at 12:18p

I've been having some problems with streams just stopping. The app shows the stream as playing (the pause button is there) but there's no sound. Sometimes it starts up again in a few seconds, but usually not. A quick pause-and-play starts thing up again fine, for a while. It seems to happen randomly, but usually within 5-7 minutes of play starting. I've tried the Low and High BW options but they don't appear to make a difference. I'm playing over wifi and my internet connection is very stable and speedy. I've seen the problem on a few different stations. I've seen this problem with: - Nexus 10 running Android 4.4.4 with Soma versions 2.2.3 and 2.2.4. I didn't have the problem when I was running 2.2.2. - Moto X running Android 4.4.4 with Soma version 2.2.4. I don't have this problem with: - Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.2.1 with Soma version 2.2.2. -- JC, November 17, 2014 at 10:05a

Hello: I just looked into getting the android app for my Galaxy S5 phone but noticed that there was a charge, which is fine. I just wondered if Is this actually your official app because the iPad app is free. Seemed odd that you would charge on one mobile platform but not on another. Thanks for the most used app on my phone and tablet! I love love love I'd love if you could add a feature whereby the app playback would pause when a bluetooth device goes away. That way, every time I turn my car off, I wouldnt need to unlock my phone and pause it manually while its blaring out of the internal speaker. -- Chris Bellers, October 26, 2014 at 1:41p

I can no longer find an option on the android app to save a favorite channel. I see the option to make a long press on the song to make it a favorite, but having replaced my phone recently, i would like to have my favorite channels filtered from the mass of channels. Hello, I just bought the app from the Amazon App Store but it doesn't play audio at all. I see here that the version 2.2.2 fixes that, that there's a problem with KitKat and the older version. Please, could you update the version in the Amazon App Store as well? In Play Store there is 2.2.2 since February and we're still in 2.2.1 :(. -- Jeston, May 22, 2014 at 4:18p

Hi, I found two issues with the search features in the menu that pops up for a track on touch-and-hold: 1. "Search in the store" generates URL in which spaces are incorrectly encoded. After selecting "Search in the store", the default web browser is opened for a link to Amazonan, in which spaces within an artist or track name are encoded as "%2520". It seems that these spaces are encoded twice: first as %20 (which is correct), and after that the % sign is encoded as %25, resulting in %2520. 2. "Search with Google" does not work with Google Chrome. When selecting Google Chrome to complete the action (or when Chrome is the default browser), Chrome is opened, but no page is shown. System information: * Android version: 4.1.2 * Phone model: GT-19100 (Samsung Galaxy S2) Apart from these issues, I am perfectly happy with the app. Keep up the good work! Thanks, Aad -- Aad Mathijssen, August 22, 2013 at 4:07a

I've just updated my Soma fm app for android (first time in ages) and my widget no longer works. Looked in the place where all my widgets are stored and its no longer there. Have you removed it intentionally and is there a problem? The reason I updated was because the widget wasn't working. Is this why it has been removed and if so is there any chance of seeing it return in a future update? Running Android v4.03 Thanks, Marty -- Marty, January 31, 2013 at 8:30a

HTC EVO 4G LTE on Android 4.1 - When listening on a 3G connection, more popular stations (350+ listeners) drop and reconnect fairly often. Stations with fewer listeners drop and reconnection rarely if ever. All stations playback smoothly using WiFi. Not certain if this is an Android issue, or if this is something going on server-side. Great app otherwise, seems better than most streaming radio clients available. -- Drake Williams, November 15, 2012 at 5:09a

HTC EVO 4G running cyanogenmod 7.2 (AOSP Gingerbread). App was flawless on this phone up until the most recent update to app v2.0. Now frequently hangs when opening a channel. "Buffering...." message does not appear. Have to FC and restart. Also, the song info does not refresh until long after the song has started, and sometimes it stops refreshing altogether, again, requiring FC and restart to clear. -- bithead, November 5, 2012 at 9:00p

installed in 1 sec, playing in 1 sec, great app, on Galaxy 9100 first model. by the way, defrag your Galaxy drive with RAXCO software, and your Galaxy runs 100 times better. Great app, as i don't need to have my laptop on while listening. GREAT !!!! -- Menno de Ruiter, November 4, 2012 at 3:37a

Using app on galaxy S3 with ics, mainly streaming via bluetooth to a Phillips speaker. Am I missing something? Where are the volume controls in this app? I have tried using the physical volume buttons on the side of my phone but the bluetooth volume already seems to be cranked. Of course, I can always use the volume control buttons on the speaker itself, and but would love to have a way to do this from the app itself, since I'm not always in the same room as the speaker. Please let me know where to find the on-app volume control/slider. -- HJP, November 2, 2012 at 6:42p

Well, I was warned. This thing is unstable on my Galaxy Nexus (Verizon) running 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean). It has hung/crashed several times already. It'll stop playing suddenly, then hung. When restarted it will have trouble getting the channel again (Groove Salad, in my case) and I have to try several times. Frustrating. -- Fred, October 18, 2012 at 2:06p

Hello from Lyon, France! When I am connected to the WiFi network and the screen is locked, the Soma FM player can not buffer the music anymore. I do not have this issue when using the 3G network. I suspect the WiFi connection to be suspended when the screen is locked (for power saving reasons). Maybe the program need additional permissions to prevent this behavior? Hello, I was just wrestling with huge battery drain problem, over 15% per hour, which is really bad. It took me a couple of days, but finally I found the culprit. It was the widget of SomaFM app. It was on my desktop, inactive but it still kept updating the artist and song information. It used network connection (happens at least in 3D) around every two seconds for that. Solved the problem by removing the widget from desktop. Just to let you know, with this huge battery consumption, the widget is quite unusable. Device: Galaxy SII, Android 4.0.3 Best regards, Juhana Heino -- Juhana Heino, March 19, 2012 at 12:39p
