OK, I've sent about 4 emails - no response. Two from last year about donating. Two this year about getting my music played. (These were mutually exclusive events btw, because I've only been back into music 2 months).
Why won't you show your audience some love. Getting new listeners is easy, keeping them is harder.
Ty-
Not sure which address you're writing to, but I haven't seen any emails from you at my address or at the dj@somafm.com address- but maybe the email was from a different name or email address. It's also possible our spam catcher got it by mistake (typically that happens if someone has an animated GIF file attached to their email - such as a signature or company logo), but we try to check that as often as possible and currently it's trained pretty well and rarely misses a legit email.
If you're mailing a specific DJ, they may or may not be able to respond to all their mail in person. Please remember, our DJs are volunteers and they all have normal jobs as well. But we try to respond to everyone who contacts the dj@somafm.com address and asks a question.
I spend a lot of time each day writing back to most everyone who writes in, and we try to respond to everyone who posts on our blog.
Sometimes, people write in, but our responses to them get flagged as spam, and they never see it. One time one person was really upset that we were ignoring them, but I had personally responded to each email he sent in, but his spam catcher kept blocking it.
In regards to music submissions, we can't reply to everyone who sends us music - we just get too much of it emailed to us. So I use my time to listen to as much of it as possible and pick the best for airplay.
Whew!!! OK, I'll buy that.
I use to listen to you guys all the time - but I think subconsciously - as I sent an email, and it didn't get a response, I listened less and less. Especially questions about contributing last year.
Interesting that you have volunteers, didn't know.
Well, do you think you can respond, to see if my music fits any of your stations? It may not, but I use to listen to guys so much I just thought I would give it a try. My goal is to release an album every month.
I have been in constant dialog with some of your Groove Salad artist Mike Milosh (my Facebook friend) and Afterlife (my MySpace friend) about technique and getting back into music. (I reached out them because I heard them on GrooveSalad and they were kind enough to establish a dialog). I haven't been in the music biz since I was 24, I'm now 47.
I was persuaded by friends to release the 1,000 plus songs I have (an album every month - good story no?). Now it's an obsession, so I play and mix constantly when I'm not working for Accenture.
Since I've been getting all these reviews from people on myspace and reverbnation, it would be nice to hear what one of my favorite radio stations has to say and if they would somehow put it in rotation. (I'm "supposed" to get in the rotation down here in Miami on 88.9 FM starting at the end of September, have an on air interview setup, but I'll wait until I pop open the champagne.)
Please let me know what you think especially since my plays on last.fm and reverbnation are picking up. http://www.myspace.com/tyshowers
And if you do respond negative or positive, I'll donate $100. Just as long as it's constructive and not just a simple no. (A little incentive for a response :-).
Keep up the good work and spinning those jams, and thanks for getting me educated on Chill and downtempo.
Ty
Ty, two things:
1. Don't send money. You're a musician, send music. We don't (knowingly) accept money from artists, record labels, etc. Its' too much like Payola and it's against our policy.
2. 1000 songs! That's too overwhelming, you'd need to pick your very best songs - 5 or 10 max to start - that you think are most in the style of stuff we play on Groove Salad. There is no way I can listen to 1000 songs and pick the best ones... we need the artists to help us and suggest to us which songs they think are best.
One thing about MySpace: I personally find MySpace a really annoying place to review new music. I like CDs because I can quickly skip into the middle of the song and "needle drop" to get a quick overview of the music. That lets me choose what tracks I should give a more detailed listen to. With myspace, you can't do that. You have to listen to the song from the beginning. (Yes, you can skip back once you've heard it once, but by then it's taken 5 minutes to download.)
This reminds me that I need to make a blog entry about what our music review process is like. At least what mine is like. Some of the other people here do it somewhat differently, but the bottom line is we need to be able to preview the middle of a track for 20 seconds or so in order to determine if it is something that fits on our channels. Sometimes I listen to the beginning and the middle, other times the middle and end. If it's a long song, I'll try listening at the 1/3rd point and the 2/3rds point to get a feel for it.
It's all because there is so much music we have to go through to find the best material to play on SomaFM.. and while I try to give everyone a chance I currently have a backlog of about 100 CDs on my desk, and a ton of other links that have been emailed.
Hope that answers the questions.
No problem. I'm sure you get overwhelmed. OK, I won't bother you. Just let me know when your backlog is clear or when you have some time.
Oh, BTW I don't have a 1,000 songs released now. I only have released 6 of the 1,000. Meaning if you go to the store or iTunes you will only see one album with 6 songs. I still have to mix down the other 900+. I'll release those, like 12-14 at a time per month as a new album.
And thanks for the response. :-)
