This is part of a letter I wrote to a friend of mine who also listens to Groove Salad: Groove Salad was enjoyable this weekend. I hated to turn it off. My poor mom was trying to call me for 2 days! LOL!!!!! It just sounded really good. In the type of weather we've been having the last couple of days, it sounds really nice. Like a ray of sunshine. Some of the stuff feels like a day inside a warm house on a stormy day. It was good. And I have it play all through the house with my little IRock transmitter. I just love that thing. Now they make those things work with a power cord so you never have to use batteries. I love it. I won't miss a beat. I have all the radios tuned into the frequency and I play it all over the place. God what would we do without SomaFM! The music really makes you more productive. It's just good stuff. Love, Minda - From Cape Cod, MA -- Minda, December 7, at 10:57p
really nice music, greets from poland !!! -- jaro, December 7, at 10:01p
And lo, did the northern ice gods descend upon soma fm, to imbue them with unearthly powers. Only soma fm was worthy of the ice gods blessing, but orcish hordes became jealous of their new power and stole the sacred soul crystals. It was then that a hero emerged; a hero brave enough to traverse the burble tree forests through the demon groves of lore, all to reach the fetid troll swamps of the northern peninsula. -- MBorel, December 7, at 8:43p

the thoughts displayed herein are true evidence that humanity is still alive inside. even if the majority is ignorant. i think this is real listener support, the feelings and emotions, thoughts of thanks and gratitude translated into music then being returned in emotional form to the source. i'm trying to be serious here, this is what keeps the station going. but still, a forum section wouldn't hurt where i could ask somaFM to check up with paypal to include Hungary in the countries section for donation w/ creditcard. would benefit both of us. Drone zone is unbelievably wonderous, some Orb would be nice. no words for my greatest gratitude to the administors. -----------StereoFood@Budapest -- Mike, November 25, at 4:50p
Commercial radio SUCKS!! I think we can all agree with that. I really am digging SOMA FM........great quality as well. I like the playlist as well that is continuously updated. I have high speed internet, but with 128kbs it is very good. I do listen Weird too. They are excellent. Anyway, what you delivered on the net is excellent, but i would like to listen some music from Quebec.... Be nice and play some our music culture here in Quebec, because we have so many talents. My co-workers are always asking me: "What on god's green earth are you listening to?!? What FM station is THAT?!?" "Soma FM!" I reply! "On the Internet!" The kind of music of Groove Salad gets too little airplay, not to say none at all, in Belgium. It is really refreshing and prooves that "contemporary music" can be subtle and have beats at the same time. It's a pity that the records cannot be found in Belgium. Keep up the good work. -- Bart , November 14, at 9:39a
I love SOMAFM and Groove Salad...but you guys have some serious streaming issues. I'll be happily listening to the Groove Salad stream and suddenly it will just "stop." I have been listening since the very beginning. I was thrilled to have found "something different". The RIAA trouble scared me into sending along a few $. I did my little part to lobby the "gubmint" via email. A few days ago, I gave a couple more $ via PayPal. If the millions of listeners (or maybe even just those who post to this page) chipped in a couple times a year, you'd have no worries. -- Darryl, November 12, at 7:42p

Hmmm... Seems I always want what I cannot have. But how about a t-shirt, sweater, etc. w/ a BLACK background to match the logo/image background? Perhaps I am asking for too much... -- Cyboman, November 9, at 5:28p
I have just moved to NY, with 1500 songs on my computer, but I have not touched them since i found your streams. You cats have got me hooked. Keep Spinning. Life will be so nice, if all we had to do was make love and listen to sweet music. -- DISIAC, November 9, at 0:36p
This is pretty nifty. Just started listening. I dig your ecclectic mix. I was wondering how a band might get on SomaFM. I'm in a band called Westford // www.mp3.com/dj_trin If you listen and like it, somehow, please toss it on this page. That would be splendid. Thanks. Peace. -- mr. dandy, November 9, at 9:19a
What excellent streams guys! It's always a treat listening to you. I even recognise a few tunes I hadn't heard in ages but have on CD's somewhere in a cupboard (used to get many every week with the electronic music mag i published a few years back). Who needs a CD collection when someone is supplying you with all the Soma you need on tap? Have a pretty extensive collection though if you're looking for the odd obscure track (Time, Rising High, R & S, Fax, Recycle or Die, TIP, New World etc). I wonder how you manage with all the bandwidth the several thousand of listeners must be taking so sent a donation to help the cost. Anyway, I'm rambling (again?) -thank you for your most inspiring work. JP, London UK. -- JP - London, November 9, at 2:29a
Unbeliveable!!! Do you know Robin Hood? ;-) Can't stop listening that shit 8-) I love Groove-Salad and Beat-Blender too!!! Hope this stream will never die. Keep it on!!! Greetings from good (c)old Germany ;-) -- Patrick, November 9, at 1:55a

From Vancouver, to Saskatoon, to Toronto and back to Saskatoon again, Somafm has been my saviour. A little Soma takes the edge off of a world of numb people. Xoph, is that you? Did you plant trees in BC? -- endorphinjunkee, November 8, at 9:34a
Great Stuff guys... ever since I found your website, I have rarely left. Keep up the cool, different music. It's a great place to get away from standard Radio, and tune into some great Jazz or nice underground stuff. Keep it Real! -- Vermont Listener, November 8, at 8:20a

Thanks for all the years of great music, I was very happy when you came back onto the wires, especially with the return of Secret Agent. The good people of internet broadcasting provide some of the small amount of good music available here in Caldwell, Idaho (inland northwest, U.S.A.) and it does not go unappreciated. -- Darrin L. Woods, November 8, at 3:14a
Drone Zone is the best ambient stream on the net. Thanx a lot guys! I still have some unrelease ambient tracks which I recorded some years ago. Thanks, Elise, for acknowledging this grave occurrence. Elliott Smith was - IS - one of my very favorite artists. Each time a song of his comes on Indie Pop Rocks, I delightfully squeal out loud. Needless to say, I'm really, really saddened by his death. I read the farewell on sweetadeline.net (a fan's tribute as well as the official website) and the story on cnn.com earlier while playing "Miss Misery" and "Jealous Guy" (John Lennon cover) on my mp3 player. That's when I lost it. Knowing it wasn't a good idea, I put on Either/or not too long ago and got choked up again when "Angeles" started playing ... that song ("I can make you satisfied in everything you do") along with several others (like "Tomorrow Tomorrow," "Between the Bars," "Pitseleh," etc.) just paralyzes me each time I hear it. I already listened to the self-titled album a few hours ago; I was tempted to put on XO, but then I figured I've sulked enough tonight already. Nearly five years ago my ex-boyfriend introduced me to Smith's music, and I came to closely associate his fantastically dark and beautiful songs with this fantastically dark and beautiful guy I loved. I listened to Elliott Smith while I was falling for him, listened while he wrestled with depression, listened while he went abroad, and listened while he broke my heart. I still listen and think of him every time. Fittingly, he was the one who broke the news to me today on the phone. I know that Matt, Elise, my ex-boyfriend and I are joined by thousands more grieving tonight for this stellar songwriter ... Elise (or whoever): check out the 66 replies to and 1814 viewings of a thread on woxy.com (Main Music Discussion Board). The first page simply confirms the rumor, but thereafter it's mostly a tribute. -- Susan, Miami University in Oxford, OH, October 22, at 10:01p
here's the thing: somafm's groovesalad IS the shit because my favourites I've heard here somehow seem to end up in what (sorry somafm) some would call a 'rotation' - that which mainstream media outlets use to supplant their slogger. The neat thing is, although some (almost all) of my faves from soma seem to appear in a 'heavier rotation' than other songs, there is still nothing but innovation and expanse to their (somafm's) constantly-expanding playlist(s)....Thx so much. I want to buy so many new artists now that we've found each other. -- me, October 22, at 7:59p
yes, RIP, elliott smith. i have loved his music for many years, and am happy to be able to play both his solo work and his previous band, heatmiser, on indie pop rocks. thanks to everyone who emailed in requests for him today - i've been really sad about the news, and it's good to know that so many other fans out there feel the same way. -- elise, October 22, at 7:19p
Great stuff. I love indie pop rocks! I've discovered so many bands through somafm...the RIAA should be paying you guys, not the other way around. On a sad note, it's really too bad about Elliot Smith. He's one of my favorites and it's always great to hear him played on indie pop rocks. Anyway, thanks for the great music. -- Matt, October 22, at 5:33p

What I really like about SomaFM is the variety in artists and tracks. Being a reviewer for hifi.nl, I have a very strong auditive memory. Listening to traditional FM is just torture for me having to endure the same songs over and over again. Even government sponsored radio (Studio Brussel) sounds like crap when the same tracks appear over and over again, sometimes 4 or 5 times in half a day. I'm not even talking about the extreme dynamics compression on FM. Ok, soma is still MP3 but it sounds decent enough for me to even play it on a 30.000$ high-end set used for reviewing :-) Everytime I listen to Soma there's something new to discover, only to realise some of my favorite tracks (the ones I write down for further investigation) take about a week before they reappear. Being a fan of Claude Challe and eastern/spiritually inspired lounge music I find a lot to discover at your station. Best regards and keep up the good work and playlists. -- Fred from Belgium, October 9, at 5:26p

It's just fantastic to listen to such beatiful channels and to think that SomaFM is about making people listen to music, not only about making them buy it. Less than 10% of our music is major label, and most of that was indie label releases that got sold to major labels. -- Rusty / SomaFM, October 5, at 0:06p
You Guys Rock!! You may actually cause me to buy cd's again :) Are most of the artists you play major label artists? Because that is the only thing that would stop me from buying these cd's from Amazon (anti-RIAA mode)Sorry to those artists that are major label... no business here until the RIAA gets into the new century with their business practices and sells a viable option online. I Just love soma.fm. Especially Cliqhop and Drone Zone. If you have nothing to do one day you could ad a function to the song history that let's the listener send a message (lika in the guestbook) to inform of the band name and/or song name. Money is underway when I get my next salary. And a big tip-of-the-day; when you need any assistance Rusty, ask for it! I'm sure there's a lot of talented people listening, over-eager to assist with services to participate in our common listener-society. I have seen one for instance, offering atterny services if you have more problems with the law, and me for one, are more than willing to assist in design-issues and aesthetics in general. I’m trying to find a song which has a woman talking about how she loves the feeling of being crushed by ocean waves. I don’t remember her exact words, but the waves reminds her that she’s alive; a return to the primitive; an temporary transcendence from our anesthetized, abstract culture. I would love to find a transcript of her words. Thanks! -- Josh, September 29, at 11:13a

Kudos to Soma for at least trying some new streaming feeds...I see in your news and events section you mentioned AACplus. Why bother? Why not go with OGG instead? I'm an Australian living in the United Arab Emirates and I would have to say that Soma is just excellent listening. A brilliant mix of chillout, lounge, acid jazz etc that is all the more refreshing because you always seem to be playing something that's not mainstream and flogged to death elsewhere. I wish I'd learned about you guys ages ago, but can guarantee that I'll keep listening wherever I am from now on. Do keep up the good work! Cheers Shal -- Shal, September 21, at 7:30a

just thought you all may wish to know (data is un-substantiated by poster) ... as far as the groovesalad is concerned... Cannabis is safe: The LD-50 (median lethal dose) of cannabis is between 1:20,000 and 1:40,000. This means that one would have to smoke nearly 1500 pounds of cannabis within about 15 minutes to induce a lethal response. In 3000 years of therapeutic and recreational use there has never been a single reported death due to use or treatment. -- specboy, September 17, at 0:17a

Thanks for saving me from getting mad! Of cause, it was more or less a pure trying out of my iTunes radio - after installing a fast WLAN hot spot here at our office grounds in Leipzig, Germany. For a while, some of his co-workers would reboot the machine that made the voice when it crashed. But then the whole division was relocated and the web site went down after that. (I was told that by a Bell Labs / ATT employee.) -- Rusty / SomaFM, August 10, at 0:10p
The new voice needs to go! At least get a sexy woman who can sound authentically sexy, not some guy trying to pretend to sound sexy. Give listeners the ability to upload station id's or get another speech synthesizer cause Mr. JC Penny doesn't fit at all. Everything inbetween in pure delight. -- waltsatan, August 10, at 11:16a
you got a really great sound. -- sergio, August 10, at 8:37a
If you want to know what happened to Big URL, go search the Slashdot.org archives--Rusty was interviewed by Slashdot and inadvertantly exposed the web address where the voice of Big URL could be found (An old AT&T text-to-voice page). Naturally, the Slashdotters brought the site to it's knees, and AT&T yanked the page forever. RIP Big URL (thanks to Slashdot). Hey Rusty, you can get a great FREE text-to-voice system called "Festival"...runs on any Linux system... -- bar, August 10, at 6:02a

Have you guys thought about selling CD's for the artists that you play through your website? You could just a be a front end for some retailers like CDBaby, Amazon, or whatever. Let them take care of the transaction, product, and shipping. You get a little for sending the sales their way. And we don't have to hunt all over for music. Everyone wins and you make a little money to boot. -- listening in Seattle, August 7, at 2:40p
Can you guys play some more U.N.K.L.E, Blood Stain is the only one I've ever heard you guys play, and I would like to buy the album but if this is the only good one they have I don't want to blow the cash. BTW, the music you guys play consists of about 80% of the music I listen to on a regular basis. Just wanted to let you know. Rock on Somage. -- SomAddict, August 7, at 1:43p

"AltaVista_Traversal" is a false alarm you will get from poorly written firewall software whenever you listen to Beat Blender. Groove Salad is like that old friend who is always happy to hear from you when you call; who might live thousands of miles away, and whom you might not actively think about day to day like a spouse or a friend from work or a roommate, but whom you just connect with no matter what the distance or the time passed. I'd like to Dedicate the track playing this moment on Groove Salad (Superworld by MoyHorizons) to my man Diz, back in LA, who finally has got his own place, and though he's hating his job, will always be the most talented artist I've ever met. -- Will Lanni, July 27, at 0:35p

why does the font get bigger and bigger the further down the list I go? Anyone else see this? -- Elmer, June 27, at 11:20p
I listen to the Groove Salad link quite a bit. I just wanted to comment that it seems to me that the majority of the music on this stream is music that was produced mid-to-late 90's? any comments? Do they not produce this music anymore? I seriiously doubt that. Is this a deliberate decision by you guys. Maybe you don't care for current stuff, I dunno. Just an observation I've made cuz I haven't listened to a lot of these tunes in years. Don't get the wrong impression, I like all this music, it's just a bit old is all.... -- gil, June 27, at 10:07a

Very little money was spent on the WMA stream. For the people behind firewalls that can't get MP3 or OGG streams it's their only alternative. And for modem users, it sounds much better than the 32k MP3 stream. -- Rusty / SomaFM, June 26, at 8:08p
SomaFM its-self is pretty much as good as it can yet, I mainly leave Groove Salad churning away which keeps me happy. My only grudge is why the hell money was spent investing/researching that goddamn awlful WMA stream. Why people insist using braindead technology. Please look at OGG, especially for when bitrate peeling becomes available, then you will not have to re-encode for different bitrates on the fly.... Other than that, keep up the good work, but please drop the cack that is WMA. -- Alexander Clouter, June 26, at 0:35p

SOMAFM is the single greatest expression of pure love of music ever experienced on the planet. Woodstock was a commercial venture, or at least that was the intention (Jimi Hendrix was the highest paid performer). Other "open" celebrations of music are all discrete events.
