Another study shows that listening to free internet radio leads to music sales

ArsTechnica, quoting NPD analyst Russ Crupnick speaking at the Digital Music Forum East conference in New York this week:

"NPD noted that free Internet radio is tied to a 41 percent increase in paid downloads too. Not only could it be sating people's interest in hearing songs before they spend money (one of the major reasons to use P2P in the first place), but it's helping users discover new music as well."

That certainly goes along with all the email and comments we receive from listeners about how SomaFM has expanded their musical horizions and led them to buy more music.

I'm a personal testament to that finding. I don't listen to a lot of "popular" radio and nearly all of my music spending is driven by songs I hear on Groove Salad.

Absolutely agree that web radio drives ALL my music purchases these days. That's all, as in every music purchase.

I think this was true of the original Napster, too. Sure, there are some who have this insatiable need to collect EVERYTHING they can, but there are also a lot of people (the majority, in my estimation) who just want to discover new music.

Chicago terrestrial radio has been lame for years. P2P was one option to get around it, and I could listen to whole records a few times before buying them. Now, with you guys, Pandora, and Lala, I have plenty of ways to discover and purchase new music.

Last thing (sorry for the mini-rant), but Gorillaz just released a new record and it's been out for listening for a few weeks or more already. I have heard the Snoop track enough to almost be tired of it, yet I plan to buy the whole thing because it's a good record overall (by my standards). That's the most important part of this discussion. If the music is good, people will ultimately pay for it, even if an option to get it for free is available.

For this statement there is no need to conduct a study. It is the universal truth.
