New laws cracking down on used CD sales...

Via ArsTechnica: ``New "pawn shop" laws are springing up across the United States that will make selling your used CDs at the local record shop something akin to getting arrested. No, you won't spend any time in jail, but you'll certainly feel like a criminal once the local record shop makes copies of all of your identifying information and even collects your fingerprints. Such is the state of affairs in Florida, which now has the dubious distinction of being so anal about the sale of used music CDs that record shops there are starting to get out of the business of dealing with used content because they don't want to pay a $10,000 bond for the "right" to treat their customers like criminals.``

More background from a piece in Billboard, which also states that these laws specifically are targeting CDs and don't apply to used video games.

First, thanks for your considerable efforts on behalf of all of us who have come to depend on internet radio (like SOMA.FM) as a source of new and emerging music.

I'm concerned about this recent post of yours. I purchase almost ALL of my music online via independent retailers or on sites like Ebay. Will this effort to muzzle or restrict the used CD market be extended to the web? I suspect there are millions who, like myself, would be impacted by such an effort.

IMO, the NARM couldn't do any more to injure their image with the music buying public than to try and restrict this market to serve their own selfish interests.
